Safety
Home EV charger installations in the UK must comply with the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671:2018, Amendment 2). In simple terms, this means:
Dedicated circuit – Your charger will be connected to its own electrical circuit to prevent overloading your home supply.
RCD protection – A residual current device (safety switch) will be fitted to protect against electric shocks.
Earthing and bonding – Main incoming earth and earth bonding to metallic pipework will need confirming.
Surge protection – Recommended to safe guard your property from potentially harmful voltage spikes.
Notification to your DNO – Forty 7 Electrical will notify your local Distribution Network Operator (the company that manages your electricity supply).
Charge Time
7kW home charger: Around 6–10 hours for a full charge, depending on battery size.
3-pin plug: Over 24 hours in many cases (only really suitable as a backup).
Most EV drivers simply plug in overnight and start each day with a full battery.
